Health City Cayman Islands offers pediatric allergy clinics which are able to provide a wide range of services to assess, investigate and manage allergic conditions in children . Allergies includes allergic rhinitis or hay fever, atopic dermatitis or eczema, asthma and food allergies. These include allergies to: nuts, dairy, pollen, animal dander, house dust mite etc.
There are broadly two types of allergies. The first group is IgE mediated or immediate reactions. The second group is Non -IgE mediated or delayed reactions. These are sometimes referred to as intolerances. IgE mediated reactions can be tested for unlike delayed reactions.
The testing offered at Health City includes skin prick testing to diagnose or exclude food allergies , and allergies to inhaled allergens . These tests give you an answer within a few minutes , are easy to do and relatively painless. You can also test allergies by performing blood tests. However , this does involve a delay in getting the results. In general, these tests are most useful when you have immediate or IgE mediated reactions to allergens.
Health City Cayman Islands provides consultations, diagnosis, advice and management.
During your child’s consultation, we take a full and comprehensive history including diet and other possible triggers. Following that, we will determine if testing is needed and the most suitable test will be undertaken. Occasionally, your child’s reactions may not be related to allergy . It is as important to diagnose allergies as it is to eliminate them as a cause of symptoms. Treatments will be recommended based on the tests and full demonstration of all devices needed for treatment will be provided.
- Allergic rhinitis: an inflammation of the nose, which is recognized by symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, blocked/stuffy nose, itching and 'post-nasal drip'.
- Anaphylaxis: a severe systemic reaction to an allergen which can be life threatening.
- Asthma in allergic children: some of the most common allergic symptoms are caused by airborne ‘allergens’, such as pollens, molds, house dust mite and pets. We provide consultations, advice, aeroallergen and animal dander testing. We also have the services of a pulmonologist for specialist management of asthma. This service offers lung function testing if indicated.
- Atopic eczema: these are increasing in young people with allergic disease and can be distressing and embarrassing. We provide consultations, advice, and management.
- Food allergies: these are often the most frightening forms of allergic reaction. Food allergies may cause a range of symptoms ranging from mild urticaria or swelling, through to the most severe reaction termed anaphylaxis. We provide consultations, advice and food allergy testing. We also investigate and manage anaphylaxis; and provide training in the use of an adrenaline or epinephrine pen.
