Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is destination healthcare?

Destination healthcare is the practice of travelling outside of Canada for the purpose of receiving medical care. The most common reasons for choosing destination healthcare are to expedite wait time for surgeries in Canada, or to have elective procedures of high quality that are affordable, and in conjunction with a restful vacation.

Is destination healthcare safe?

Every medical procedure carries risks no matter where you are having the medical procedure. Pre and post-treatment planning can help reduce risks and ensure continuity of care. Health City Canada has involved a Board of Directors that consists of Canadian Health Care Practitioners that have helped to build a model that complements the Canadian Public Healthcare system and allows for this continuity of care. Health City Cayman Islands is a world class hospital consisting of a highly qualified team of doctors and specialists who are international healthcare leaders in their field, with a broad range of specialties and backgrounds. Since opening in 2014, Health City Cayman Islands has cared for over 10,000 patients and has an infection rate of less than 1% and a zero incidence of bedsores. In May 2015, Health City Cayman Islands was awarded Joint Commission International Accreditation, which is considered a gold standard in global health care and was one of the fastest hospitals to ever be accredited, doing so within 1 year of operation. The surgeons at Health City Cayman Islands have each performed thousands of procedures, where Canadian surgeons may only perform hundreds in their lifetime. To learn more about individual physicians on staff, please visit the website and read the short bios that outline their education, training and vast experience. Physicians at Health City Cayman Islands are always available to talk to interested patients and Canadian physicians.

Do I have to tell my family doctor?

Although going to Health City Cayman Islands for your medical treatment is your choice and decision, we advise patients to inform their family doctor of their plans. Your doctor may also be taking care of your post-operative needs upon returning to Canada.

Will my Canadian family doctor or specialist care for me once I return after my surgery?

It is recommended you discuss your plans with your family doctor prior to traveling to Health City Cayman Islands for your procedure. In the event that your family doctor is unable to take care of your post-operative care, we will set you up with a doctor who can.

What happens if there are complications during or after surgery?

In the unlikely event of a complication during surgery, Health City Cayman Islands is a World-Class, Joint Commission Internationally Accredited,  full service hospital with an ICU and is able to handle any complication that may arise. If the patient prefers, the hospital can stabilize the patient and send him/her back to Canada by air ambulance. Patients are only required to pay for unforeseen costs that are not at all related to the primary surgery, such as an air ambulance. We therefore encourage patients to purchase medical complication insurance. Once back in Canada, the Canadian patient will continue as a patient under the medical system in Canada.
