Atrial Fibrillation Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis and Treatment
There are several tests and procedures your doctor may use in conjunction with a medical history and physical exam if atrial fibrillation is suspected. The diagnostic process is designed to evaluate your blood chemistry, how well your heart is functioning, and where the dysregulation of impulses is originating.
Atrial fibrillation can be treated and managed such that you can have an active, normal life. Treatment options depend on the type and severity of the disease, but can include a combination of lifestyle changes, oral medications, and medical procedures. The goals for treating atrial fibrillation are to restore normal heart rhythm, reduce and control the number of ventricular contractions per minute (“rate control”), treat any underlying diseases causing AFib, and reduce the risk of blood clots.
